The Laws of Izendorn:

Arson and Destruction of Property

This crime is the destruction of or damage to public or private property through the use of any means, or specifically fire.

First Offense: The offender hall pay a fine equal to the cost of the structural and aesthetic value of the property damaged or destroyed. This fine shall be at least ten gold.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall pay a fine of no less than fifteen gold and no greater than five gold plus the cost of the structural and aesthetic value of the property damaged or destroyed. In addition, the offender shall publicly suffer a number of lashes to be determined by the ruling noble.

 

Assault

This is the use of force, threat of death or bodily harm, against another sentient being.

First Offense: The offender shall be fined five gold plus the cost of healing the victim and restoring to victim any armor or protective spells damaged in the process of the assault.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall be fined five gold plus the cost of healing the victim and restoring to victim any armor or protective spells damaged in the process of the assault. In addition, the offender shall publicly suffer ten lashes.

 

Bribery

Bribery is the attempt, successful or otherwise, to gain influence, favors or undue consideration from a noble or nobles through the offer of goods, services or coin.

First Offense: The offender shall pay a fine equal to twice the estimated value of the bribe in gold.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall pay a fine equal to five times the estimated value of the bribe in gold. The offender shall also publicly suffer five lashes.

 

Chaos Casting

This is the use of any spell or item that reproduces the effect of a spell with the word “chaos” in the incant that is not specifically necromantic in nature.

First Offense: The offender shall publicly suffer ten lashes for each chaotic spell cast.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer one death.

 

Conspiracy

Conspiracy is the active participation in the planning or commission of a crime without being the one to carry out the crime itself.

First Offense: The offender may be charged a fine of ten gold or be subject to the punishment of the crime that the offender conspired to commit.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall be subject to the punishment of the crime that the offender conspired to commit.

 

Contempt

Contempt is the failure to show proper respect to a noble. This may be shown by lack of formal courtesies, such as bowing and using proper title. This may also be shown by failure to obey the legitimate order of a noble.

First Offense: The offender shall pay a ten gold fine.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall pay a ten gold fine and publicly suffer ten lashes. In addition, the offender must read or repeat the responsibilities of the noble from the Code of Chivalry so that the offender may always remember the weight that the noble personage bears.

 

Counterfeiting

Counterfeiting is the making, using or selling of false money.

First and Subsequent Offenses: All of the offender’s worldly goods shall be confiscated. In addition, the offender shall publicly suffer ten lashes for each time that the offender has been convicted of this crime.

 

Failure or Refusal to Pay Taxes

The failure or refusal to pay a tax levied by the nobles of this land is a crime. The nobles have the option to make arrangements for payment with those that are trying to meet the payment requirements.

First Offense: The offender shall pay twice the amount of the original levied tax, at the discretion of the ruling noble.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall pay five times the amount of the originally levied tax, at the ruling noble’s discretion.

 

Forgery

Forgery is the making, use or selling of false papers or papers with false signatures.

First Offense: All such papers shall be confiscated and the offender shall pay a ten gold fine.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: All of the offender’s worldly goods shall be confiscated.

 

Impersonating a Noble

This crime is the presentation of oneself as a person of noble title when this is not the case. It may involve the use of statements or the use of false papers.

First Offense: The offender shall suffer one death.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer one death and be made known as an outlaw.

 

Kidnapping

Kidnapping is the forcible abduction or confinement of another sentient being.

First Offense: The offender shall pay a ten gold fine and publicly suffer ten lashes.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer one death and be marked as an outlaw.

 

Mockery of a Noble Title

This crime is the derision of the value and/or character of a noble title, the noble holding that title or a group holding noble title such as a knightly order.

First Offense: The offender shall pay a fine of ten gold and publicly read or repeat the Code of Chivalry. In addition, the offender shall be made known as an outlaw for a period to be determined by the ruling noble.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer one death or be permanently known as an outlaw.

 

Murder

Murder is the commission of an act that leads to the death of another, directly or indirectly. (Hiring an assassin shall be considered equal to murder.)

First Offense: The offender shall suffer one death and pay a ten gold fine.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer obliteration.

 

Necromancy

Necromancy is the casting of necromantic spells or rituals, as well as the use or possession of necromantic items. This shall also include consorting with the undead.

First Offense: The offender shall suffer one death.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer one death and confiscation of all worldly goods.

 

Raising or Maintaining a Permanent Circle of Power without a Writ of Permission

All legal circles of power shall be approved and recorded by the ruling noble of that town or area.

First Offense and Subsequent Offenses: The illegal circle shall be destroyed. The offender shall pay a fine of twenty gold and the component cost of destroying the circle.

 

Slavery

Slavery is the capturing, trading or owning of another sentient being.

First Offense: The offender shall suffer one death and confiscation of all worldly goods.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The offender shall suffer obliteration.

 

Theft

Theft is the taking of goods or coin from another.

Burglary

This is the taking of another’s goods by ransacking that person’s residency.

Robbery

This is the taking of another’s goods through use of force or threat thereof. The force may be threatened against the victim or another. Thus, this shall include extortion.

Stealing

This is the taking of another’s goods through deceit, stealth or trickery.

First Offense: The stolen goods shall be confiscated and returned to the victim. The offender shall pay a fine of double the value of that which was stolen.

Second and Subsequent Offenses: The stolen goods shall be confiscated and returned to the victim. The offender shall be stripped of all worldly goods and publicly suffer ten lashes.

 

Treason

Treason is the planning or the attempt to overthrow a legitimate government.

First Offense: The offender shall be stripped of all worldly goods. In addition, the offender shall be known throughout the Kingdom of Izendorn as one to be killed on sight until the offender’s permanent death.

 

 

Definitions and Clarifications:

Confiscation of All Worldly Goods

All alchemical products and recipes, armor, battle scrolls, coin, formal magic components and scrolls, potions, spell books, traps, weapons shall be removed from the person being so punished as shall any jewelry and other trade items of worth. In addition, all lands and buildings within the borders of Izendorn shall be confiscated from the offender at this time.

Lashing

The person to be punished shall be stripped of all armor and protective spells. Then shall that person be struck the number of times specified by the presiding noble for the minimal amount of damage to be done with each weapon strike.

Outlaw

A person who is known to be an outlaw is not under the protection of the laws of Izendorn. No act committed against that person shall be considered a crime until the end of the period of punishment should that period be anything short of the remainder of the offender’s life.

Obliteration

This shall be understood to mean that the offender shall suffer three deaths through ritual or manual means. Should the offender choose to resurrect elsewhere following the first manual death, the offender shall be known as a person to be killed on sight in any portion of Izendorn until all three deaths are delivered.

Reading or Repeating the Code of Chivalry

The offender shall publicly read the Code of Chivalry in loud and clear voice. If the offender cannot read, the Code shall be read to the offender who shall then repeat it in a loud and clear voice. Any failure to read or repeat the Code of Chivalry in a loud and clearly understood manner shall result in five lashes for each failure. The presiding noble may also decide to have only the portions of the Code of Chivalry particularly relevant to the crime recited.

Value of Property Damage

An artisan, appointed by the presiding noble, of skill appropriate to the work that was damaged or destroyed shall evaluate this. Some standard values for standard goods may be found with each noble district’s official copy of the laws.

Clarification of Laws for Oasis

Chaos casting is considered an acceptable form of self-defense in Oasis. Should magic be cast from chaos other than in defense, it shall be considered Assault and treated as such.  Necromancy is illegal as indicated by the Kingdom laws.
